AI in Cinema: The Lesser-Known Inspiration Behind “Her”

The 2013 film “Her,” directed by Spike Jonze, features an AI named Samantha that develops a complex emotional relationship with its user. While many are familiar with the movie, fewer know that Jonze was partially inspired by a chatbot program called “A.L.I.C.E.” (Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity). Developed in the 1990s by Dr. Richard Wallace, A.L.I.C.E. was an early attempt to simulate human conversation using natural language processing, winning the Loebner Prize multiple times. Though less sophisticated than Samantha, A.L.I.C.E. laid groundwork for exploring AI’s potential to simulate emotional intelligence.
